SMASH It! Musical Development Workshops
- Present and pitch your song and scene to award-winning producers in a workshop setting and get feedback
- Network with industry pros in a casual environment, and get them to engage with you and your work
- Learn about what needs to happen in your libretto, and when
- Receive a professionally-recorded video of your presentation for your website
- Stream your presentation on the CreateTheater YouTube channel for maximum exposure

Part 3: Back Into the New World (September 22):
Getting the Audience Back into the New World in Act 2
How has the world of your musical changed since the end of Act One? Learn to make your events in Act One Pay Off in Act Two and build heightened action to set up the climax to comee.
We’re specifically looking for 10 minute submissions of song and scene from the top of Act Two to the 11;00 Number, which often includes ballands and scenes during “The Big Gloom,” in this Third Workshop.

Part 4: The Pay Off and The Message (December 8):
Nail the complete climax and your message
The climax is called ‘the obligatory scene” and is the highest point of emotion in your musical. Learn how to incorporate the three parts of a classical climax into your scene and make deliver over your message in the finale to send them home singing!
We’re specifically looking for 10 minute submissions of song and scene in the musical’s climax to the finale in this Fourth Workshop.

GUIDELINES
WHO CAN SUBMIT
• Producers are invited to submit new work that they are interested in developing.
• Theater companies are invited to submit new work that they wish to co-develop with us
• Writers are strongly encouraged to submit. CreateTheater exists in service to writers.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR)
We are looking for a diversity of work, commercial as well as experimental or “non-traditional.” Basically we are looking for contemporary stories that are ready to be presented in front of an audience (including devised, site-specific and/or immersive work).
- We are interested in full-length plays and musicals, dealing with stories of significance in terms of subject matter
- Plays and musicals that deal with and explore current social issues are always of interest.
- Works may be as short as 75 minutes with maximum length of no more than 120 minutes, with no more than 12 actors (smaller casts are preferred).
- Work in its present form must not have had a previous commercial production (readings and workshops are fine).

HOW TO SUBMIT:
For ETC and all programs (except for the SMASH IT! Musical Wokshop)
In order to ensure a “blind” selection process, please remove your name/production company from all materials on every page. We cannot do this for you.
Fill out the online application, and be prepared to upload the following documents to the application form
(a) one blinded copy script (total of 20 pages only) uploaded to the application. (You may be requested to send in the full script at a later date.)
(b) one copy of a short synopsis (maximum one page)
(c) one copy of a cast breakdown and production history
(d) statement of purpose for having your play or musical developed with CreateTheater
(e) a professional resume outlining your previous work, plays written and produced, and any other experience or detail you’d like to share to familiarize us with your work.

Submit for all 2024-25 CreateTheater programs
What we provide: As a non-profit, for your participation fee we will provide support with casting, pulling together a team, paperwork, dramaturgy, and some marketing and promotion. You will be responsible for presentation costs and marketing to your own email lists and social media.
Participation fees vary depending upon project, but readings range from $2000-6,000. Opportunites exist for Showcase productions and streaming opportunities.
